Last week was the second week of our school year here at the Ryder Studio. We begin the year with two weeks of painting poster studies.

We set up this three-hour pose on Friday morning as a color mixing challenge: iridescent fabric, warm golden incandescent primary light on one side of the model, and on the opposite side a second light colored with a blue gel.

Between March 20 and 25 Karen Cope will be offering a sculpting workshop at the Ryder Studio School.

Karen is a California-based figurative sculptor, who studied at the Florence Academy. Her latest project is a cross-country teaching tour that she calls "Sculpt Across America", the stated objective of which is to increase appreciation for figurative sculpting across the United States. Artists’ Statement

In a world that moves as insistently as ours, still life is like a rest in musical notation, opening up silence and room to breath while participating fully in the rhythm and flow of the composition. The term “still life” binds together two complementary ideas: life (vital, quick, moving) and still (static, quiet, persisting). It is a stillness that comprehends dynamism.

In French and Spanish, still life is called “dead nature” (nature morte, naturaleza muerta). The English term, with its emphasis on life, provides a curious contrast with its romance language analogs. At the Ryder Studio, we work from life (i.e. not from photographs) meaning that our work is a meditation on the presence of the objects in our compositions. By working from life, we hope to draw vitality into our work, bringing a fresh perspective and depth of consideration to simple objects. In this way, we direct our attention to the profundity of the everyday: the movement of a rose, the delicacy of a postage stamp, and the enigmatic translucency of a pearl.

We hope you enjoy our work, and that our still life speaks to you of both tranquility and vitality.

Hardy souls of the Ryder Studio braved a seriously flooded arroyo (see below) for the sake of tequila this weekend. We hiked in, drove the long way round, and forded the raging river in order to sample the sweet nectar of the blue agave. A seriously committed lot, aren't we? Greetings from sunny (and hot!) Santa Fe. One week ago members of the Ryder Studio hung their first ever public exhibition at Harry's Roadhouse, a much-beloved eating establishment in Santa Fe. So far we have gotten an extremely positive response to the show. If you are in town, stop in to Harry's to check it out! It is a great chance to see some of our work (and, if you want, to purchase our work). The show hangs until mid July.

If you find yourself unable to drop in to Harry's for a margarita and a plate of blue corn turkey enchiladas (if you find that you are in France, for example) then you will find some pictures below. (Thanks to Bethany for the photos.)

Randy Orwig

Hi everyone. Randy, in case you don't already know him, is a really wonderful model who is visiting us from Florida. Tony has painted him a couple of times (see here). Anyway, Randy has a fascinating Flickr page on which he posts all sorts of versions of himself by artists from all over the country. The first link is a source for Corian Palettes. Art Specialties International will cut the material to size, but it will require some polishing. No power tools are needed, just a couple grades of sandpaper (1000 & 2000 grit) and some polishing compound available at Auto Zone. I have some sandpaper and polishing compound left if anyone wishes to use it for their palette.

Only certain colors are available in ¼ inch thickness. Tony’s Corian palette color is Dusk. The cost is around 40.00 with shipping.

Friday Feature: The Trouble with Tribbles

The trouble with tribbles is, apparently, that they aren't the right shape to be useful for Tony's purposes. No matter. Yesterday, while critiquing Deborah's drawing of Toby, Tony invented a "shaved mutant tribble", cylindrical in shape, to illustrate what happens to Toby's stubble as it turns under his jawline. This lead to much discussion of the principle of the "tribble horizon". Surely Deborah will not forget this example.

Following the discussion, it was decided that members of the Ryder Studio would found a band called "The Shaved Mutant Tribbles". There is a rumor that Tobias Hall (AKA "Cosmic Ray"), of the band "Photon Envelope" (lead singer and guitarist Tim Stotz, of Studio Escalier) may defect to the Tribbles.

Friday Feature: Belated Koala Story

While making a mixture of cobalt violet light and Old Holland ochre on John's palette, Tony described the resulting color as something one might feed to an "orphaned baby creature" with an eyedropper. The creature he had in mind was a koala, which, he explained, one would probably have to feed something really easy to stomach, like watered down grape jelly (think of cobalt violet light and you might see some connection here). Here is the recipe for scones. I substituted cherry flavored Craisins for the regular raisins and increased the sugar by ¼ cup. After burning the first batch it occurred to me perhaps I should adjust the recipe for the altitude. I increased the baking temperature a bit and reduce the cooking time by a couple minutes.

Scottish oat scones

Makes 12.

ingredients

1 1/2 cups all purpose flour

1 1/4 cup old-fashioned oatmeal

1/4 cup sugar

1 tablespoon baking powder

1 teaspoon cream of tartar

1/2 teaspoon salt

2/3 cup unsalted butter, melted

1/3 cup milk

1 egg, beaten to blend

1/2 cup raisins

preparation

Preheat oven to 450°F. Grease cookie sheet. Combine first 6 ingredients in large bowl. Mix together butter, milk and egg in another bowl. Add to dry ingredients and stir until just moistened. Mix in raisins. Shape dough into ball.

Place on lightly floured work surface. Pat out to form 3/4-inch-thick circle. Using sharp knife, cut into 12 wedges. Transfer to prepared cookies sheet. Bake until light brown, about 12 minutes. Cool slightly on rack. (Can be prepared 1 day ahead. Cool completely. Store in airtight container.)
